Devon History And Background

Devon is awash with exciting places to visit and sights to see, from its miles of Jurassic Coastline to the Cathedral City of Exeter, experiences, activities and exciting days out abound. There is evidence of settlers in Devon from around 6000BC, though whether these Stone Age hunter gatherers found somewhere to get a decent Devon Cream Tea can only be speculated upon. Certainly the modern visitor can enjoy a superb foodie experience in the exceptional cafes, tea rooms, restaurants and Gastro Pubs that provide some of the freshest local produce including of course that ubiquitous cream tea but also a wide variety of other fare such as fresh fish, hand made pies or maybe even some locally produced Organic ‘Red Ruby’ beef.

If expanding the waistline is not enough, then you can certainly expand your life experiences with so many exciting activities to pursue on your visit, and what ever your interests may be you will most certainly find something to suit in Devon. All types of water pursuits are catered for including; surfing, boating, canoeing and extreme watersports, for those who are not adrenalin junkies there are so many other outdoor pursuits to follow such as horse riding, golf, fishing and cycling. If you enjoy walking or maybe ‘twitching’ then you will be totally spoilt for choice with the miles and miles of sandy beaches, rugged coastline and beautiful countryside.

Without doubt all visitors should include a trip to The English Riviera, so named because of its moderate climate, stunning sandy beaches and that idyllic Mediterranean ambience. This area includes the towns of Paignton, Torquay and Brixham. Torquay is bustling by day and lively by night, offering superb shopping facilities and some excellent restaurants. There is a harbour and marina and gentle strolls can be enjoyed along the palm tree lined seafront and promenade. In the evening there are a wide variety of clubs and bars providing energetic nights out, or for those looking for less energetic entertainment there are many traditional pubs to be enjoyed.

The Port City of Plymouth is great for those interested in the nautical, sandwiched between the rivers Tamar and Plym, this vibrant city provides a wealth of maritime pursuits as well as the National Marine Aquarium for the landlubbers. This seafaring City is steeped in history and was the port that the Pilgrim Fathers departed from on the Mayflower for their trip of discovery to the New World. Modern Plymouth offers much in the way of interest for visitors, from its outstanding shopping centre to the impressive Plymouth Hoe.

There is Exeter the Cathedral City with its mix of old and new, olde-worlde streets with quaint boutique style shops and the new swish shopping centre. Exeter is an exciting, vibrant microcosm and perfect for those that are looking for all the attractions of a big city but in a smaller more compact way. Devon provides so many impressive places to visit that it would be impossible to list them all, but it is hoped that the small selection of wonderful places listed will whet your appetite to make Devon top of your list of ‘must visit’ destinations.
